Supermarket boxes are free, but they are also weak, dirty and all different sizes. As a result, they crush when stacked, split when wet and make loading slow. Proper moving boxes cost a little. However, they protect your things and make the whole move faster.

This page lists the boxes and materials we supply, how many you need for your home and how to pack them well. If you would rather we did the packing, see our packing and unpacking service.

Moving boxes we supply in Nairobi

We stock four standard box sizes plus special boxes for clothes and pictures. Because each size suits a different kind of item, a mix works far better than one size.

BoxSize (approx.)Best for
Small40 x 30 x 30 cmBooks, files, tins, tools and other heavy items
Medium45 x 35 x 40 cmKitchen items, shoes, toys and small appliances
Large60 x 40 x 40 cmBedding, towels, cushions and light, bulky items
Extra large70 x 50 x 50 cmDuvets, pillows and stuffed toys only
Wardrobe box50 x 50 x 100 cm with railHanging suits, dresses and shirts
Picture boxFlat, adjustableFrames, mirrors and small artwork

Also, all our boxes are double-wall cardboard, which stacks higher and resists crushing. Heavy items always go in small boxes, because a large box full of books is too heavy to lift safely.

Prices for moving boxes in Nairobi vary a lot between sellers, mostly because of board strength. A cheap single-wall box may look the same on the shelf, but it often collapses under a second layer in the truck. That is why we only sell double-wall boxes for moving.

Packing

Packing materials

Still, boxes are only half the job. The right materials stop items moving and breaking inside the box.

  • Packing paper. Clean, ink-free paper for wrapping plates, glasses and ornaments, and for filling gaps.
  • Bubble wrap. Extra protection for glass, electronics and very fragile items.
  • Packing tape. Strong brown tape plus a dispenser, which saves a lot of time.
  • Stretch film. Wraps furniture, holds drawers shut and keeps dust off mattresses.
  • Mattress covers. Plastic covers for single, double and king mattresses.
  • Marker pens and labels. For room names, contents lists and "fragile" warnings.
  • Cell dividers. Cardboard dividers for glasses, bottles and cups.

Packing

Moving box kits

To keep things simple, we sell kits sized for bedsitters, apartments and family homes. Each kit includes boxes, paper, bubble wrap, tape, a dispenser, markers and labels.

You can also buy single items. In addition, if you book a move with us, packing materials are discounted and delivered with the crew.

How to pack moving boxes properly

Well-packed boxes rarely break. So, whether you buy moving boxes in Nairobi from us or elsewhere, follow these simple rules:

  1. Tape the bottom twice. Run tape along the centre seam and across both edges, in an H shape.
  2. Heavy at the bottom. Put heavy items low and lighter items on top.
  3. Fill the gaps. Use crushed paper or towels, so nothing moves when you shake the box.
  4. Do not overfill. The lid should close flat. A bulging box crushes the box above it.
  5. Keep the weight sensible. If you cannot lift it comfortably, it is too heavy.
  6. Label two sides. Write the room, a short contents list and "fragile" where needed.

Our guide to packing for a move covers each room in detail.

Packing

Common packing mistakes to avoid

Most damage in a move comes from a few simple mistakes. Fortunately, each one is easy to avoid once you know it.

  • Using one box size for everything. As a result, large boxes end up too heavy and small ones too light to stack well.
  • Leaving gaps. If items can move inside the box, they will knock against each other on every bump.
  • Skipping the bottom tape. In fact, a single strip of tape is the most common reason boxes split open.
  • Packing liquids with other items. Instead, seal bottles in a bag and pack them in their own box.
  • No labels. Otherwise, you open twenty boxes to find the kettle on the first night.

Materials for fragile and special items

Some items need more than paper. For example, flat-screen TVs travel best in a padded TV box or wrapped in a blanket and film. Similarly, mirrors and glass tables need cardboard corners and a picture box or a simple wooden crate. Meanwhile, lamps travel with the shade packed separately and the base wrapped in bubble wrap.

Musical instruments, artwork and antiques often need custom crates. In that case, our specialist furniture team can build a crate on site and move the item for you.

Boxes for students and small moves

Students and people moving a single room usually need only ten to fifteen boxes. So our starter kit is a good fit. It includes enough moving boxes in Nairobi for a hostel room or bedsitter, plus tape and paper. After that, if you need help with the move itself, see our small and budget moves.

Delivery and collection across Nairobi

We deliver moving boxes in Nairobi to most estates within one to two working days. For instance, orders to Kilimani, Westlands, Kileleshwa, South B, Kasarani, Ruaka, Syokimau and Rongai usually arrive the next working day. Further areas may take a little longer.

After your move, we can collect empty boxes and paper for reuse or recycling. That saves space in your new home and keeps cardboard out of the bin.

Packing boxes for offices and shops

By contrast, businesses need different materials. Offices use archive boxes for files and reusable plastic crates for desk items. Shops use strong boxes for stock, with dividers for bottles and fragile goods. We supply both, and we can deliver larger quantities on pallets. For full office moves, see our office movers.

Reusing and recycling boxes

A good double-wall box can survive three or four moves. Therefore we inspect boxes when we collect them and reuse the strong ones. Weak or wet boxes go to cardboard recyclers. If you want to recycle at home, flatten boxes and keep them dry. The National Environment Management Authority website explains how waste should be separated in Kenya.

Why buy your moving boxes from us

First of all, our boxes are the same ones our own crews use every day, so we know they hold up. In addition, we keep enough stock for busy month-end weeks, when many shops run out. Also, our team can tell you exactly how many you need, which saves you buying too many or running out on the last night. Families who buy their packing boxes in Nairobi from us often upgrade to our packing service for the kitchen alone, which is the hardest room to do well.

Costs and pricing

Getting a fair price for moving boxes in Nairobi

A fair price for moving boxes in Nairobi starts with an assessment, not a price list. First, we look at your items by video call, photos or a short visit. Next, we send a written quote listing the crew, the truck and any extras. Then we talk it through, and you can adjust the scope to suit your budget. Finally, we confirm the agreed price in writing, so everyone knows exactly what is included before the crew arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes do I need for a 2-bedroom house?

Most 2-bedroom homes need about 12 small, 20 medium, 10 large and 3 wardrobe boxes. Homes with many books or kitchen items may need more.

Do you deliver boxes on the same day?

Often, yes, for areas close to our base, if you order early in the day. Most Nairobi deliveries arrive within one to two working days.

Can I return unused boxes?

We collect unused and used boxes after your move. Unused, undamaged boxes can be credited back if agreed when you order.

Are supermarket boxes good enough?

They can work for light items, but they are often weak, dirty and uneven in size. Proper moving boxes stack better and protect fragile items far better.

Do you sell bubble wrap and tape separately?

Yes. You can buy bubble wrap, packing paper, tape, stretch film and mattress covers without boxes.
